The Cluster Fly
The cluster fly (Genus Pollenia) can be found in many parts of the world. Cluster Flies are usually about 7mm in length and have short golden brown hairs on the thorax with lines or stripes behind the head. The abdomen is typically grey in color.
Unlike the wings on a house fly, the cluster fly has wings lay flat on the thorax and are slightly overlapping. Cluster Flies tend to fly a lot slower than a house fly. In the fall season when the temperature starts to get colder at night
the cluster fly comes into houses and buildings for warmth. They make their way into attic spaces (sometimes called attic flies) and wall voids where they will hibernate for the winter. In the spring when the temperatures rise, the cluster fly will emerge to
make their way to the grass to lay eggs. While many make it outside and are buzzing in the grass many others get stuck inside and tend to congregate around the windows and doors. While there is no real health risks associated with cluster flies, they are a
nuisance and for most are very undesirable.
